The late 1980ies were my time of theatre evenings. During these years, the theatres were the place where political, cultural and social problems were not only named but analysed and discussed while in most other public places and especially at school the old socialist taboos were still quite effective. After 1989, theatres lost their relevance for me, and so it's been almost 16 years, before I set foot again into the theatre Berliner Ensemble again. This time not for seeing a play but for showing my daughter places in Berlin's city centre which she didn't know yet.
I was struck by the magnificence of this rather small entrance hall. In my memory, all this was dark. But I didn't pay much attention to architectural details anyway during those years when the history, present and future of a whole political and cultural system were at stake. | |
