Our weekend on the island of Inagua... The Bahamas' southernmost island...

Here is the part of the plant where the salt is collected. The salt has been dumped onto these conveyor belts and it is then delivered round to the machines in the distance that deposit it onto the salt mountain. This salt will eventually be transported to a large ship that takes it to Florida where it is processed into all the different grades of salt. This plant makes three grades, a very coarse grade, a medium coarse grade and a smaller coarse grade. The latter one is called Fisherman's grade... and like it's name implies it is used by fisheries to pack and store fish in order to preserve it for transport. This plant does not produce table salt.

The salt is "made" using seawater that has been pumped onto the land. Actually it's a very shallow lake called Lake Windsor (or Lake Rosa... they have not decided on one name)...
