Interesting question but I have no idea ;-)

I lived in Sweden a few years ago, so I looked up a swedish site with the aid of Google.
Here is a loose translation":

"A Grip... (Gripen means THE Grip" ....is a mythical creature with the head of an eagle, eagle´s claws and the body of a lion. The female Grip has wings. It symbolizes the sun, the sky and the light of the dawn, but in the role of guardian of treasure, or guardian of the road to salvation, it represents caution and revenge.
The Grip is, like the unicorn, a heraldry animal/figure. Within christianity the Grip symbolizes the devil wich flies away with the souls of humans".

-I also saw Gripen (the mythical animal, I mean), translated to "Griffin".
See wikipedia info here if you like :-)

I´m not sure if Griffin and Gryphen is the same thing, but it sounds like it to me ;-)

-Um, yes, I just now found this site http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Gryphen.
It says: "griffin, in ancient and medieval legend, creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion.

Its name also appears as griffon and gryphon.
The griffin originated in ancient Middle Eastern legend and is often found in Persian sculpture and the decorative arts. Although its significance is obscure, it is often thought to have been a protective symbol, representing strength and vigilance".

-So the short answer to your question apperars to be "yes" ;-D
