If you didn't use the flash (the exif info on here never gets whether Nikons used the flash - and always say not used) may I suggest you do? Using a fill flash either on or remote from the camera - can make a huge difference. At least for me.:-)
I'm curious why you chose ISO 400 instead of 200 ISO. Since you are in mostly in the sun here (where balancing is always a difficult task) and unless the little washed out look was straight from the camera and not edited, it appears there is more than enough light to use the slower speed..
Oh..and the ISOs were 400 because friggin Jamie never leaves my stuff alone...and I *assume* he DOESN'T mess with my camera/settings -- because I ask him not to...but of course, he still does....and so I was too STUPID to check and make sure the settings were okay......UGH
