I know this statue - I slipped over on the ice that it formed one winter's night some years ago ;o)

I have a photo of one of its' former companions - which was also my favourite statue - Forward. Must try to locate the photo and post it .............

I agree Pam. 'Forward' was a great piece of work..a little 'bolshevik' in style maybe, but a definate 'peoples' work of art. The kids loved it!! and so did I. Pity it wasn't made from a more substantial material. I've heard that a similar thing happened to another of Anthony Gormleys works in some other part of the world! I also have some pics of it with kids all over it. i must look them out.

I think it was designed so that people could climb on it; I wrote to Raymond Mason, the sculptor and he sent a lovely letter back. He was both angry and sad at the suggestion that the material he used was inadequate. He said: "Polyester resin is a tough material, and when we assembled the material we used blow torches."

The press were responsible for publicising inaccurate information.

I agree with you that it was a tough material. As you know it stood up to thousands of children climbing on it daily. By 'inadequate' I was really referring to the fire resistance of the material.
