Although this is sort of a Remnants image, I'm not sure if it is going to make the final selection of the colour images.
Walton Spire is one of it's own. Some of you may be familiar of my Marsden Park images (see my archive). This spire, although not in the park has a strong connection. The story goes that Richard Thomas Walton (who lived and owned Marsden Park in the early to mid 1800's) was just as a religous fanatic as his Reverend father was.
Prior to the spire being a cross it was a stone monolith. As the stone had pagan connections, Richard Thomas had it broken up and altered to this spire. The bottom half of the cross is all that is supposed to remain of the monolith.
Although the monolith was a sad loss. Richard Thomas missed the most important stone. A little way down the hill is a large, rectangular stone erratic that is named the Alter Stone. This stone is believed to be a druidic alter where rituals took place. | |
