I was weeding in the back yard this afternoon and a couple of these guys came out of the ground. I like most insects, but Jerusalem crickets creep me out a little.

We always called them potato bugs. Apparently they can destroy potato and other crops, but I don't think they chirp.

Yeah, it was ugly. They do make noise by thrumming their abdomen, according to several web sites.
