El Lector was chosen by the committees of people who worked in the cigar-making industry. He would read to the cigar workers during their workday. The committees chose what he would read which including everything from political material to romantic novels. This was part of an exhibit at the Tampa Bay History Center (Tampa, FL) depicting the role the cigar industry played in the area.
