One of the many doors of the Town Hall of Leiden. This Renascence building dates back to 1600.
Netherlands, Leiden, March 2009
Above the door you can read a text that refers to the Siege of Leiden. It all happened during the Eighty Years' War in 1573 and 1574, when the Spanish attempted to capture the rebellious city of Leiden and ultimately failed:

The text (in old Dutch) reads:
"NAE ZWARTE HONGER-NOOT
GEBRACHT HAD TOT DE DOOT
BINAEST ZES-DVZENT MENSCHEN
ALST GOD DEN HEER VERDROOT
GAF HI ONS WEDER BROOT
ZO VEEL WI CONSTEN WENSCHEN"
meaning
"After a black famine
leading to death
of almost six thousand people
to regret of our Lord
provided He us again with bread
as much as we could wish"
