My contribution to Proverbmonday 21 July 2008 is a photo of a small part (1/25) of the famous Pieter Bruegel painting "The Dutch Proverbs". The complete painting pictures over 120 proverbs and sayings, and was shown earlier ( http://www.fotothing.com/senna3/photo/34b4c53a96afe870d7007b97d510f76c/start=37 ).

In the above picture one may recognize for example:
"De beste Griet die men vandt, was die de duivel op het kussen band" meaning something like "The wife wears the breeches" or "The grey mare is the better horse".

Thank you Baltic.
Yes, you are right, at the time Pieter Bruegel was called the New Hieronymus Bosch!

Will, this small part of the Bruegel painting already contains 5 proverbs or sayings and I mentioned just one. I have a very detailed documentation on the whole painting (Die Niederländischen Sprichwörter by Rainald Grosshans), but it is in German, so I have to translate and to trust my dictionary! The image of "the man who is hanging on for dear life" pictures, according to Grosshans, "Ein Pfeilerbeisser" = "An arrow biter" and the meaning is "A hypocritical church-goer".

Thank you Peter for enlightening me as to these interpretations! I'd certainly love to see more! An equivalent term here for (Ein Pfeilerbeisser" = "An arrow biter")..would be something like 'back slider'...I realized when I first saw this one there were 'religious connotations'...noticing on the 'horns' on the man held down and I suppose equating down on the ground level with the pigs! Lots of symbolic images. :)

That is right Will. The literal translation of the proverb "De beste Griet die men vandt, was die de duivel op het kussen band" reads something like "The best wife who one can find, is the one who is able to fasten the devil on a cushion". One of my dictionaries on Dutch proverbs (proverbs is one of my hobbies, so I have a lot of books on them) gives the meaning "De vrouw heeft de broek aan" = "The wife wears the breeches". Thus, this proverb refers to the woman who is binding the devil, the man with the horns.
As to the woman with the fire tongs and the bucket, here the first interpretation is (again according to Rainald Grosshans): "Sie trägt Wasser in der einen und Feuer in der ander Hand" = "She has fire in one and water in the other Hand" meaning "She is unreliable".
Sometimes one scene has different interpretations!

All so interesting! It certainly gives one a lot to think about doesn't it? Reminds me somehow of the 'female warrior' and matriarchal societies too. When they really did have the upper hand cultrally and sociologically speaking! Also, I think people in general are unreliable, in the sense that if only they won't do, or think as we would like or wish them too ourselves! And, then religious beliefs accentuates all this, and a lot of problems too it seems! And art in some form or another sheds light on these and tries to make sense of it all..:)

Bruegel was a brilliant painter Ometepe with a lot of humor in his paintings!
Btw, he was born in Breda in the Netherlands, so the Dutch claim that he was from the Netherlands and not Flemish, but his wife was from Antwerpen and he got part of his education in Antwerpen too!

Wonderful, I've always admired Bruegel.
