Is it the fruit... we would say "truksvy " if it is edible..!!

I am totally amazed, tonight I heard a TV program... CACTUS is not original a S.Africa plant. will have to go and google that. :-)

I don't think these are edible.
As far as I know the cactus comes originally from North and South America.

Liz, I was wrong, the fruit is edible!
Mario provided me with the name of the cactus and in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opuntia_ficus-indica you can read that the fruit is edible.

oh Yes.... delicious... Peter.. "prickley Pear... we say "truksvy "' it does grow here .. and we can buy it ... delicious... as a child we visited family on farms and then we could pick it from the cactus....but so much fine thorns.. and once you have those thorns in your fingers it is very hard to get rid of it... but the fruit was worth it... the cows eat and love the plant.
we have seen so many of these along the train rails on our trip...but not fast enough with the camera... so Yellow the fruit sits there.. Koos and I could just look and not touch..:-) :-) :-)
if you ever see the fruit in a shop or on a stall ... try it for sure..:-)
