The Irrawaddy River is the principal river of Myanmar (Burma), running through the centre of the country. Myanmar’s most important commercial waterway, it is about 1,350 miles (2,170 km) long. Its name is believed to derive from the Sanskrit term airāvatī, meaning “elephant river.” The river flows wholly within the territory of Myanmar. Its valley forms the historical, cultural, and economic heartland of Myanmar.
