Larry, the name Leonberger is derived from the city of Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. According to legend, the Leonberger was ostensibly bred as a 'symbolic dog' that would mimic the lion in the town crest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonberger
