Is there a constant wind in The Netherlands? Do the mills automatically turn into the wind? Old windmills here in the USA have a vane that turns the blades into the wind, but I don't see that on the mills in Holland.
No Larry, not at all, both with respect to strength and direction, although a W, NW or SW wind is more frequent. Durtch mills do not automatically turn into the wind, much too heavy wings. The "bar construction", I do not know the correct English word, at the back of the mill serves to turn the wings. In a photo of Anna-Maria: http://www.fotothing.com/Annamaria/photo/61faa6d1adf64d85478d6cd4d24c8822/ you can clearly see this construction. People can walk on the "balcony" around the mill to move the wings in the right position.
Thank you for the information Peter. I've noticed the bars on the back side of the mills in the past and have been curious about their function. Now I know!!!
