The Great Theatre
Turkey, Ephesus, Sept. 2013

Ephesus was an ancient Greek city built on site of the former Arzawan capital, and later a major Roman city, on the coast of Ionia, near present-day Sel├žuk. Ephesus was famed for the Temple of Artemis, the Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre, which was capable of holding 25,000 spectators. It was first constructed in the Hellenistic Period, in the third century BC during the reign of Lysimachos, but then during the Roman Period, it was enlarged and formed its current style that is seen today. This open-air theater was used initially for drama, but during later Roman times gladiatorial combats were also held on its stage, with the first archaeological evidence of a gladiator graveyard found in May 2007: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephesus
