Decoration in the Lady Thien Hau Temple
Vietnam, Hoi An, March 2010

The temple commemorates Lady Thien Hau, the Goddess of the Sea, who was born in China on March 23 of the lunar year in AD 940. Legend tells that in her sleep her spirit flew to the sea and at the sight of endangered sinking vessels the goddess flew to the sailors and saved them from sea monsters. She was thus worshipped as the protector of the Chinese fishermen.

First impression: a dragon with chicken feet. I'm alway curious how various myths get started and who started them, and why! I find mythology in general fairly interesting.
