Such partly thatched roofs are typical for many farms in the province of North-Holland Gunilla.

Mary, many years ago it was a bit of a competition to have the nicest decorated roof of the neighbourhood. Another example of such a decorated roof is in this picture http://www.fotothing.com/senna3/photo/e3317f06720fc16a94feec6f8ebc1247/ not far from the farm above!
