Hortus Botanicus of Amsterdam
Netherlands, Amsterdam, April 2008

The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanical gardens of the world. It contains about 6000 plants and over 4.000 different species. Originally the Hortus was a medicinal herb garden, founded in 1638. Thanks to the VOC (United East Indian Company) the Hortus became larger and larger. It now contains many exotic plants and trees, e.g. a 300 years old bread tree from South Africa.

Yes Bea, in Dutch we also call it Kurk Eik, but my dictionary said that I should write Cork Tree. I like Cork Oak much more!

Sure does look like cork, is this tree still alive or is it dead? or is it a by-product of the tree?

The tree was still alive Lucky, it just a very special bast that can be removed and will grow again.
