A very special house.

Larry, the Dutch oil mills used rapeseed, groundnuts and linseed to get the oil. In the river Zaan area (De Zaanse Schans is a located at the river Zaan), oil mills were used to produce paint. The Dutch version of the link above gives much more information about the function of the individual mills you can see at the Zaanse Schans. I remember that you do read German, so look at the link http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96lm%C3%BChle. There you can find more details than at the Engilsh link.
I will post a picture of one of the oil mills we saw during our visit.

Peter....it is so nice that the people and government of the Netherlands is preserving these historical artifacts for the current and future generations....so many times we let great and significant structure fall to ruin.....

That is true Jake, the Dutch government spend a lot of money in preserving these "monuments of the past". It surprised us that no fee is asked to enter this Zaanse Schans village!
