Kyaukthawgyi Pagoda
Myanmar (Burma), Mandalay Hill, March 2012

The Kyauktawgyi Paya is known as the pagoda of the “Great Marble Image”. The chief feature of the Kyauktawgyi Paya is the huge seated Buddha figure sculpted from a single block of pale green marble. Reportedly it took 10,000-12,000 men 13 days to transport the stone block from the Ayeyarwady river to the site of the pagoda where it was carved: http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Asia/Burma/Mandalay_Division/Mandalay-1179715/Things_To_Do-Mandalay-Kyauktawgyi_Paya-BR-1.html

Sitting that style alone isn't that easy as first look, and that's what makes Buddhism stays with mankind...

After reading Jake's and Günter's comments, I began to wonder how many people in Western civilizations have actually read about the life of Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha. I do not know if this is a representation of Gautama Buddha or not??? How about you Peter?

Larry, our guide told us that the statues of the historical Buddha Gautama usually are in sitting or reclining position, whereas Kakusandha, Koṇāgamana and Kassapa are represented in standing position. So I guess this is the Gautama Buddha.

Peter the Bamian Buddha in Afganistan which the Talibans had destroyed was also in standing position. If you visit Buddhist sites in India you shall find Buddha in sitting, standing & reclining positions.I think your guessing is correct, the sitting style of this portrait tells that it is Buddha. A great capture my friend.

Thanks for the informative comment Soumen!
Yes you are right, the historical Buddha is not as a rule in sitting or reclining position.
