My contribution to Proverbmonday 5 February 2007 is a photo showing a small part (1/25) of the famous Pieter Bruegel painting "The Dutch Proverbs".
The complete painting was posted earlier: http://www.fotothing.com/senna3/photo/34b4c53a96afe870d7007b97d510f76c/start=37 .
It pictures over 120 proverbs and sayings. In the above picture one may recognize:

“Men moet zeilen wanneer de wind waait” = "Men must sail when the wind blows" = “Hoist your sail when the wind is fair ”
"Voor de wind is het goed zeilen” = “It is good sailing before the wind”
"Men moet een oogje in het zeil houden" = "One should keep an eye on things"
”Wanneer ik niet geschikt ben om ganzen te hoeden dan mogen het ganzen zijn” = “If I am unequal to look after geese then let it be geese”
“Wie geboren is om te hangen verdrinkt niet” = “He that is born to be hanged shall never be drowned”
“Waar aas is zijn kraaien” = “Where there is prey there are crows”

You are right DGM, and it applies to any section of this Bruegel painting. I divided it into 25 parts (5-by-5) and made a photo of each part. So each part will contain about 1/25 of the 120+ proverbs, i.e. in the average 5 proverbs!

I guess that Lourens is your grandchild and that you were asked to baby sit. We too are often asked to look after our grandchilds (3, 5 and 9 years old). I know the feeling of beeing exhausted!

And, thank you very much for your nice comment!

proverb senna3...extraordinary contribution..!!

Excellent contribution.
I think the first sentence should read as:
"Men must sail when the wind blows"

Thank you Litz. No I will not show all 25 photographs I made of the various pieces of the Bruegel painting. Perhaps one or two more and then it is enough!

Thank you Hans. I will add your English version of the Dutch proverb.
When I consulted one of my handbooks on proverbs (Van Dale's "Spreekwoorden in Zes Talen" van H.L. Cox), your version was not given, but instead the one in the above description.
