Coat of arms of Edam
Netherlands, Edam, April 2008

The coat of arms of Edam should be held by a bear as shown in the town hall photo two pictures to the right. But when I took the town hall I didn't notice the coat of arms and I did not take a close-up. Therefore the above substitute which we found as a decoration at one of the older houses in Edam.

~ Great find, it is nice to see they keep them painted, in this country so much of things like this are lost forever, developers do not care to keep our heritage! ~

I think in the Netherlands only the very rich people did decorate their houses with coat of arms Mcdonegal. But I must confess that I am not familiar with the history of heraldry. I looked at Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms ), but I didn't find information about Holland.

Lizzie, in the Netherlands owners of old and historical houses can get money from the goverment for restoration. This helps a lot to keep our heritage safe!

~ Here too Peter, but too many, developers want to destroy our lovely buildings to build multi-complexes. Even listed buildings have been 'accidentally' part or fully pulled down to try and get planning permission. Usually this is after it has been denied a couple of times already ~
