You would be surprised. In Southern California, We have the best of both worlds. We are close to the ocean from our home in San Jacinto. We can be there in about 45 Minutes. We are close to both the high desert where we live, or the low desert and Palm Springs in 35 to 40 Minutes. Oak Glen, Ca. we can reach in 30 minutes, it is at an elevation up to 5000 ft. we also can be in Idyllwild, which is about 35 minutes due East of us it is 600 ft. above sea level and also get snow every year.

I lived in New Zealand for the first 49yrs of my life, it's a country where you can experience all weather conditions, ( if you have ever seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the more recent Hobbit movie, you will see much of what New Zealand has to offer). I now live in Western Australia and I will never see snow here, of that I am sure.
Heat, sand, red dirt and flies, along with lots of beautiful scenery, is what you find here.
