Back a few years ago, I was feeding about 50 pounds of black oil sunflower seeds every week in the winter to goldfinches, until I realized the more seeds I put out for them, the more birds would come. With the price of bird seed the past two years, I've given up the practice of filling the feeders three times a day. Is that a 'song sparrow' in there with the finches? The cardinal really brightens up the scene.
SOOO sweet. We too buy sunflower seeds almost every week. We put up feeders that don't let them all fall out on the ground...the squirrels were standing there ALL day eating them...AND shaking them out of the feeders!
A wonderful collection of little visitors...though I can sympathise with Larry....I am in and out like a fiddler's elbow restocking the wall with suet pellets and sunflower hearts.....but it's worth it!

linnywv, Marvin put up this shelf feeder so we could get pictures of the birds....fortunately this year we have not had the squirrel problem or we would not have been able to do this.
That is ceratinly a nice scene to have in the garden.
I have a similar one but not so welcome. It is the sparrows in the chicken house stealing the chicken feed
