I think that places like this should be obliterated from the face of the Earth but the graves of those who were murdered have memorials to remind the World of their suffering and sacrifice.
I have a lot of sympathy with what you've said. This is what I wrote on my Facebook page:
'I've just got back from spending some hours at the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps. My fears of over-touristed hot-spots were founded. How can one reflect on one of the world's greatest horrors when one is being jostled by point-and shoot camera-touting tourists who point there cameras at anything in their path? "Oh look, a pile of shoes removed from children before they were gassed." Snap.'
I agree with the comment but then again we should not forget.
I'm Polish myself, used to live not that far away from Auschwitz, and of course in the years I went to school we had school trips to the place (I'm talking before the Berlin wall fall). I never went myself, couldn't bring myself to face the cruelty of the place. Just a thought gave me goosbumps. Until today I never visited any of the Polish concentration camps. But I do think they should exist and be open to tourist. We should not forget what happend there. And it would be good to learn the lesson... One day maybe...
