There were a lot of settlements in the place of Kailaka, dating from the Bronze and the Iron ages. In the first millennium BC, the Thracian population settled here, and after them the Romans found road station and the fortress “Storgozia”. The origin name of Pleven was namely “Storgozia”. The archeological finds show that the life in the Kailaka settlement continues during the Middle Age. The present name of the town is mentioned for the first time in a document, dated 1266. The remaining of this fortress, nowadays are settled in park “Kailaka”. The fortress itself was built in the late antique period - IV-VI c., on an area of 31 decares. Preserved and restored are: the fortification system, early-Christian basilica and choreum. The basilica with dimensions 45 by 22 meters is three - naved, three - abscind, with a colonnade on the south side. | |
