First in sequence of three. Here is the knife after gluing the handle to the blade and obviously before shaping. The blade is taped for safety because these blades come razor sharp. I decided to make a pair of knives for our daughter and husband as Christmas gifts when I cam upon the Myrtlewood burl.

Yes, I have used birch and it makes a wonderful handle! Nothing will maintain a grip like rubber in wet conditions, but birch is a fine handle material. Birch has a fine grain but is not as difficult to work as hardwoods such as oak and cocbolo. When finished birch has a soothing light-brown color similar to a woman with a slight tan from the sun. The latest knife I made is a paracord wrap handle, and that will maintain an excellent grip regardless of conditions. I will upload a picture of that knife soon.

Thinking about it, the knife with the elkhorn handle may have the best grip of all. Because that knife went to a friend when finished I have not had the opportunity to try it when camping, but the natural material like elkhorn has a very sure grip under the conditions that existed during the making of the knife.
