This is the way puto bumbong is cooked...the mixed ingredients are placed inside this bamboo cannons and steamed till the mixture darkens. You don't want to overcook it 'cause the mixture will pop out of the cannon...making it hard for you to catch it...if you can!:)

Puto Bumbong is a delicacy that is especially made for Christmas. "Puto" means steamed glutinous rice, and "bumbong" means bamboo cannon. It is a purple-colored food cooked in standing bamboo or metal tubes attached to a steam-producing tin can or cylinder that is mounted on a small pot of boiling water or steam.

Puto bumbong is made of ordinary glutinous rice, pirurutong (glutinous wild rice), butter, muscovado, sesame seeds and grated coconut.

The end of "Simbang Gabi" or Dawn Mass ends the selling of puto bumbong here in our city.

It is delicious, PhotoPro! I look forward to eat this every time we attend the Dawn mass. There are some cities which sells this delicacy the whole year round but not in our city. Good thing so I won't eat too much sugar! :)

Kate, I'm also from Visayas and they usually sell puto bumbong only on the start of Simbang Gabi and ends simultaneously with the last day of Simbang Gabi. Sa Manila meron whole year (I just knew about it from the internet). Masarap! Hayaan mo. Mag EB kaya tayo sa Manila and eat puto bumbong? LOL
