ANCIENT TREE(S). This is but one of a very special group of trees. They are many hundreds years old. They were already old when we, the Portuguese, first set foot on this island back in 1418. They are call TIL, and belong to the LAURISILVA type of forest, protected by the UNESCO as world heritage. This kind of forest only exists here (and residues in the Azores and the Canaries) and dates back from before the last ICE-AGE. Pretty amazing, ah?
