In the Mediterranean maquis, as well as trees and shrubs typical, there are parasitic plants that live at the expense of the trees stain.
These plants are twisted to the plants and climb up to look for light.
They are called also climbing.
Their presence form an impenetrable tangle in the woods.

1) Robbia selvatica (Rubia peregrina).
