Mammoth is situated close to the north entrance in Yellowstone National Park. It is a hill of travertine (a form a limestone) that has been created over thousands of years from hot water that cooled and deposited calcium carbonate. The unique, "lunar" landscape changes constantly from new deposits and changes in temperature. As formations grow, water flows in different directions. The blue, green and orange colors are from algae and bacteria that like the hot water.
