When I lived in Tennessee there were taxis called jitneys that would run set routes and people would use.
Wonder if jeepney and jitney are the same, just modified by local language?

but i think, though, that the word "jeepney" came from the vehicle (JEEP) that the Americans brought and used here, in the Philippines, during WW II... :)
