The majestic cathedral of Milan, dedicated to "Maria Nascente" and today one of the world's largest churchs, was begun in the second hald of the 14th century - and the work went on for 5 centuries...

THE MADONNINA...
On the highest spire of the cathedral, soaring to 108.30 meters (a height never exceeded ny any other of the city's monuments) there sparkles a true symbol of MIlan: the statue of the Virgin with it's covering of 3900 gold sheets. The statue , universally known as Madonnina ( literally, "Our Little Virgin Mary") was cast in copper in 1774 by Giuseppe Bini to drawings by Giuseppe Perego. Four (4) meters and 16 centimeters tall, this image of the Virgin watches over the city and its inhabitants, surrounded by a crown of smaller spires populated by stars, angels and saints..
