I've never had much success at growing onions. These are volunteers that grew from an onion end 'piece' that I buried like I do all my veggie scraps. Earth worms love the scraps, but some most below ground crops do not decomposed, but send out new shoots (onions, potato skins, carrot tops, sweet potato trimmings, etc).
