-And this is the "Eagle´s Nest" itself! (The Kehlsteinhaus).
Unfortunately it was overcast when we were there - and since this is so high up (on a mountaintop almost 2000 metres in the air!) -we were basically IN the clouds! :-D
-So we couldn´t enjoy the (apparently) really amazing view.
But it was very interesting to be in a place wich was so steeped in history -and connected to some of the major historical events of the 20th century!
The Kehlsteinhaus was the Nazi party´s official present to Adolf Hitler on his 50th birthday. Nicknamed Eagle's Nest by a French diplomat, it was meant to be a retreat for Hitler and a place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries.
Hitler´s first visit to the Kehlsteinhaus was on September 16, 1938, the day after he had met with British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain at his Berghof house (lower down on the mountain) in the famous "appeasement" conference which many historians consider to be the beginning of World War II.
