(Leifur Heppni).
He was the son of "Eirik the Red", who was the first (western) man to settle Greenland.
-His son, "Leifur Heppni" (i.e.:Leif the Lucky), discovered America in the year 1000.
(That is about 500 years before Christopher Columbus).
However, he had the good taste, to not tell very many people about it ;-)
-In any case, WE OWN AMERICA! (Just so you know) ;-D
Why, you might ask? -Well, because we discovered it, we claimed it (and named it), and we never gave it away!

Anyhoooo.....
Behind the statue of Leifur Heppni, is the famous "Hallgrímskirkja" wich towers over downtown Reykjavík,
(i.e.: Hallgrím's church).
Hallgrímur Pétursson
(i.e.: Hallgrim, son of Peter)
, was one of Iceland's most famous poets, -and composed (amongst other things) the national anthem of Iceland.
(Wich is in fact a hymn).

Oops.....
....my mistake!
....(As Ander quite rightly pointed out):
The national hymn of Iceland is indeed composed by
Matthías Jochumsson ! !
(But it is still a hymn) ;-) ;-) | |
