A VISIT TO THE FARMERS' MARKET DURING A VERY RAINY DAY

St. Jacob is located about an hour’s drive west of Toronto, near the city of Waterloo in Ontario.
Mennonites trekked from Pennsylvania in Conestoga Wagons and settled in and around St. Jacobs in the late 1700s and early 1800s, making St. Jacobs one of the original Mennonite settlements in Ontario. Today, the rural areas around St. Jacobs Country are populated with many Old Order Mennonite farmers who retain the religion, customs and lifestyle of their 19th century forefathers.
St. Jacobs was first known as "Jakobstettel" which means "Jacob's Village". St. Jacobs was officially named in 1852, the "St." being added "for the sake of euphony" and the pluralization was in honour of the combined efforts of Jacobs C. Snider and his son by the same name - founders of the Village.

St. Jacobs Farmers' Market continues to complement the strong agricultural activity of the area, and provide a unique and lively place to shop. At the markets, you will find aisle upon aisle of fresh produce from across Ontario and from local farm gardens. Plus, you will find meats, cheese, baking, crafts, home decor, furniture, clothes, tools and more. Local delicacies such as summer sausage and pure maple syrup are sold by Mennonite farmers who travel to market by horse and buggy. Indoors and outdoors, you will find more than 600 vendors!
