My 2012 South Dakota Trip
(Try original view)
Exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota.
We continue our journey along the Needles Highway.
You won't want to be in a rush when you drive this spectacular road. As part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, the Needles Highway stretches 14 miles through granite structures and pine covered mountains as it slowly climbs in elevation. The numerous hairpin curves as well as the abundance of scenery to absorb, cuases us to drive 15-20 miles or less per hour.
Peter Norbeck wanted to simultaneously preserve and provide access to some of the most beautiful regions of the Black Hills. In 1919, he designed the route for the Needles Highway, a road that many engineers deemed impossible to build. Two years and 150,000 pounds of dynamite later, the road was opened to automobiles.
