A last photo of Debby at the Winnipeg Assiniboine Zoo.
Debby passed away yesterday at the age of 42 years. Multiple organ failure made the decision to euthanize her slightly easier, although still very difficult.
Winnipeg's famous polar bear, Debby, who drew throngs of visitors to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, had been showing signs of her advanced age and the prognosis of recovery from age-related medical problems was not good. Debby continued to reside in her home exhibit and was out to greet her "public" up to the last day. At 42 years, 4 months, Debby was the worlds oldest living polar bear, an achievement recognized in the 2008 Guinness Book of Records and in the Polar Bears International newsletter. In fact, she appears to be the third oldest bear ever recorded for all eight living species of bears.
Winnipeg is in mourning and will miss her very much.
