The Beginning of Winnie The Pooh.
At the beginning of WW I, lieutenant Harry Colebourn, of the Fort Gary Regiment from Winnipeg, found an abandoned bear cub near White River in Ontario. It became a mascot of the regiment. Harry named it Winnie after his hometown Winnipeg.

I heard this to be true, but can't recall where. Maybe I read it when I was in Winnipeg.

yes it is true:)
The cub went with the regiment when it shipped over to Great Brittain. When the regiment was dispatched to the European war theatre, the cub tsayed in Great Brittain. From there the story was picked up and it became Winnie the Pooh as we now know it.

For the others YES it is a true story.
John a bit more history is A.A. Milne would take his son/nephew Christopher to the London Zoo and his two favorite animals were winnie the bear and pooh the swan.
