My 2008 trip to Holland

Exploring the City of Groningen.

(Original size: try it...you'll like it) :):)

The St. Joseph Cathedral in Groningen, The Netherlands, dates back to 1886.
In 1884, the local pastor F.W.A. van Elzen received orders from the archbishop of Utrecht to build a second church to serve the rapidly expanding city of Groningen.
The cathedral was designed by the architect P.J. Cuypers who also designed the stations of Amsterdam and Groningen as well as the museum in Amsterdam.
Construction started on July 2, 1886 and the cathedral was officially dedicated on May 25, 1887.
The tower was not yet completed at that time.
In 1976 the cathedral was officially included in the Dutch list of monuments.
The completed tower rises 76 meters above the city.
The interior of the cathedral was constructed with an eye on the general population of the time. The ornamentation functions as a picture book for less literate people of the time, depicting various themes of Christian history.
