THE MANY ASPECTS OF MOUNT RUSHMORE
While Mount Rushmore is wonderful to see no matter the time of day, it is a very special experience to be there for the night ceremony when they light the mountain. The ceremony includes a film with the history of the presidents, the singing of a patriotic song and then all veterans in the audience -- and it is a big audience-- are invited onto the stage to give their name and branch of service. While I was there, some 100 veterans made their way down to the stage, with each and every one was welcomed with a handshake from the ranger. Then the flag is lowered. Even as a Canadian who sometimes is somewhat cynical, I found this to be a very patriotic and stirring moment. | |
