Exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota.
We continue our journey along the Needles Highway.
You won't want to be in a rush when you drive this spectacular road. As part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, the Needles Highway stretches 14 miles through granite structures and pine covered mountains as it slowly climbs in elevation. The numerous hairpin curves as well as the abundance of scenery to absorb, cuases us to drive 15-20 miles or less per hour.
We have reached the "Needles Eye". This unusual rock formation about halfway up the highway is the location of the narrowest tunnel. | |
