Our 2007 Holiday
Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, South Dakota

Custer State Park in the Black Hills encompasses 71,000 acres of spectacular terrain and is home to an abundance of wildlife. The park features the 7,242-foot Harney Peak, the summit of which can be reached by hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding. Rock climbing, fishing, and chuck wagon suppers are some of the other activities one can partake in at the park. History and culture also abound. It is in this area that Custer’s expedition first discovered gold in 1874.
Travelling the 18-mile Wildlife Loop through the park, you will encouter a herd of 1,500 bison roaming freely throughout the park, often stopping traffic. The herd is one of the largest in the world. Bison can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds and can be unpredictable and dangerous. It’s safest to view them from inside a car. Besides bison, the drive along the loop will give you often the opportunity to see other wildlife such as pronghorn antelope, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, wild turkeys, prairie dogs, and a band of wild burros.

Obviously, a Fotothinger does not stay in the car, but gets as close to the wildlife as possible, even when the buffalo go for a bath:)

it's incredible how many of them there were before the Europeans arrived - then driven near to the point of extinction
