I've been helping a mate with the rebuilding of this beautiful old timber cruiser - a 1946-built Halvorsen 40 footer. New engines (2 x Yanmar turbo-diesels of 140hp each), new steering gear, gearboxes, bow-thrusters, GPS-prep, electrics, in-&-out hull treatment and painting, new brass work, complete 'guts-out' interior re-fit in Australian teak to the original plans as drawn up by the builder, Mr Lars Halvorsen (an Aus-Swedish legend!)......the list goes on and has so far cost nearly double the original purchase price!!!!!
(BTW I say 'help' but really all I'm good for is lightening the the beer load!) ;-))))))

Wooden boats make me feel good, like I live in a timeless moment. Suzie is right: they do smell fantastic. I'm glad you're helping in any way that you can. ;-)
I sure would love to hear those twin engines under power.

The original motors, apparently, would have been a pair of Chevy sixes, which in turn were replaced in the 80's with a pair of Nissan SD33 diesels. The problem though was that the props were never changed - cruise RPM for the Chevy's was probably about 2500 rpm, whereas the diesels (any diesels of around 3.3 litres / 202 cu i capacity) have an optimum speed of closer to 1800rpm. This resulted in it being severely under-geared. Having said that, when you gave the diesels a bit 'o schtik, it sounded like a monster truck with a behemoth V12!! Hopefully the new engines (with the new optimum props) will sound like a big V8 and allow it to cruise at a happy 12 knots. ;-)))
