The custom of the Indians (or what ever it is we are expected to refer to them as these days) is that the poles are never repainted once they have been done the first time. However, because this one is on the grounds of the Govenor Generals home the Government has been given permission to keep it in good repair to preserve it. They are supposed to just gradually rot away and go back to "mother earth". They are definitely nice to look at.
