Beach "rats" in Oceanside, CA.
I thought they may be squirrels, but they are twice the size. And VERY bold! There were a gang of them. They live in the hardend sand dunes in tunnels. Must be part of the squirrel family. Although, I know not.

It is cute, as a kid on the Texas beaches we had something similar. Don't know if there are any left since the condos moved in, which I think is a bigger pest.
