Blooming now: Santa Cruz manzanita (a rare and endangered member of the Erica family)
This botanical garden was started by a man who appreciated and collected manzanita plants from all over California. He was instrumental in saving specimens of a number of endangered varieties, including one that grew only in the City of San Francisco.
So far this year, we've had a dry and mild winter and I started seeing manzanitas in bloom in December. I love the tiny urn-shaped manzanita flowers, which come in shades of creamy white and pink.
Happy Valentine's Day to all of you from Manzanita Land!
