The Albany Bulb used to be a dumping ground for construction detritus. When the dumping was halted in 1984, some of the local artists started using the junk as raw materials for their artwork. Now The Bulb is a popular outdoor art gallery and it has been made an official California State Park.

"Junk is the most pervasive product of technological society ... junk is our ultimate landscape.
"Many artists have been fascinated by junk and by the inexhaustible richness of forms it assumes. Artists have been painting landscapes for centuries, and if ours fills up with junk, junk is what they paint. Artists always know where the action is....
"And what do artists do with the junk we all make? Why, they look at it, sniff it, take it home, play with it, create little junk worlds just like the real one, and maybe sell it to collectors or museums."
