Visiting the East Bay Botanic Garden in Alameda County, California
Sunday, January 16, 2011

This botanical garden specializes in plants that are native to California, and all of the climate areas are represented with specimen plants. It's an interesting place to visit, even in the middle of winter.

There's only one palm tree that is actually native to California, and that is the California fan palm (Washingtonia filifera). It's native only in the desert areas of Southern California, mainly the Colorado Desert.

When I visited Joshua Tree National Park a few years ago, I saw them in their native habitat in a lush oasis that was filled with songbirds. At the time, I didn't own a camera. I hope to go back again someday and get some photos to share here.

I am always amazed at the way the old leaves fall down against the trunk of these palms and seem to be subsumed into the living tree.

That is interesting, I always assumed palms were imports except for the palmetto.
